The award has been made in recognition of charitable services to Children and Families dealing with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma and to brain tumour research.
Abbie's Army was founded in 2012 by Abbie's parents Amanda and Ray Mifsud after the sad loss of their daughter Abbie.
At just six years old, after five traumatic months, Abbie had lost her life to the children's brain cancer DIPG.
We're honoured to receive this award, but its the children and families that experience this most terrifying diagnosis that drive us forward every day. This award is accepted on behalf of a whole community that deserve so much more...
Feeling hopeless, and incredibly shocked to discover the dire statistics around this disease that is considered 'terminal at diagnosis' and without any treatment protocol, the early years of the charity were spent raising awareness and fundraising as much as possible to support crucial research into DIPG within a very limited research field.
it made absolutely no sense to us that Abbie had been diagnosed with this most fatal children's brain cancer....and yet there wasn't one drug! Quite simply...no one knew what 'it' really was and there were none to give her...
After more than a decade the research field is now thankfully incredibly active, great strides have been made into identifying the underlying biology of the disease.
Although researchers are closer than ever to the discoveries that can target drivers of DIPG tumours, they continue to need financial support and the plight of DIPG/DMG children has not been diminished.
In the UK the charity has actively pursued researchers and supported new clinical trials for children that were simply not possible 10 years ago.
Working closely with clinicians and well placed in the patient community the charity remains parent led and will continue to fund research, support families and advocate around the unmet needs of UK children with DIPG/DMG.
